From there, we continue on foot to Shibuya, experiencing the seamless transition between Tokyo's modern residences and the contemporary metropolis.

Yanaka Cemetery (Park) & Yanaka Ginza
Yanaka, home to numerous temples, is one of the best places in Tokyo to feel the spirit of "Old Edo." We begin with a serene morning stroll through Yanaka Cemetery, leading us to the Asakura Museum of Sculpture for its 9:30 opening. Afterward, we explore the streets where the traditional atmosphere and hospitality of Edo still thrive. We then pass through the vibrant Yanaka Ginza and the charming, winding backstreets as we head to our next destination.

The ASAKURA Museum of Sculpture
The ASAKURA Museum of Sculpture was formerly the atelier and Japanese-style residence of ASAKURA Fumio, a renowned figure in modern Japanese sculpture. From the building’s ingenious details to the serene courtyard shaped through deep contemplation, this entire environment was created by Asakura himself. Within this space, his view of nature, philosophy, and aesthetic vision are brought together in remarkable harmony.

Nezu Shrine
A mystical sanctuary with 1,900 years of history. Famous for its vibrant tunnel of vermillion Torii gates, this lush shrine offers a spiritual escape from the urban bustle.

The Yokoyama Taikan Memorial Hall is the Kyoto-style Sukiya atelier and residence where Yokoyama Taikan, a leading figure of the modern Japanese art world, spent his later years. Opened as a museum in accordance with his final wishes, the traditional house and the garden of the four seasons now serve as the museum itself. Visitors can experience the philosophy and sensibility of Taikan, who held a profound appreciation for the beauty of nature.

The Former Asakura Residence
Nestled in a quiet corner of Daikanyama in Shibuya, the Former Asakura Residence was built in 1919 as the private home of Torajiro Asakura, then Chairman of the Tokyo Prefectural Assembly. It is an exceptionally rare and well-preserved cultural property where traditional Japanese architecture and a stroll-style garden remain integrated as one. The two-story wooden house, incorporating refined sukiya-style design elements, harmonizes beautifully with the garden, which reveals a different character in each season.

After visiting the museum, spend a moment discovering the "true face" of Tokyo in the Yanaka Ginza area—a place where vibrant daily life and nostalgic charm beautifully intersect.

ASAKURA Museum of Sculpture
The ASAKURA Museum of Sculpture was developed by ASAKURA Fumio, a leading figure in modern Japanese sculpture, as a place for his artistic creation, instruction, and daily life. His aesthetic sensibility is strongly reflected not only in the architecture but also in the central garden. The pond, richly filled with water and known as the Goten Pond (Pond of the Five Virtues), together with the surrounding massive stones and trees, merges seamlessly with the building to create a dense and immersive atmosphere.

The Former Yasuda Kusuo House & Garden
An entrepreneur’s estate in a prestigious historic district. Located in Sendagi, once home to elite scholars and business leaders, this beautifully preserved 1919 residence offers a glimpse into the high-quality cultural life of early modern Japan.

Dine at Inshotei, a historic landmark in Ueno Park since 1875. Savor a luxurious "Hanakago" lunch—an elegant basket set featuring handmade tofu and seasonal delicacies within this atmospheric architectural treasure.

Ueno Toshogu Shrine was established in 1627 to honor the first shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu. Its golden main hall, which survived several wars, showcases the opulent architectural beauty of the early Edo period. It stands as a magnificent symbol of the Tokugawa shogunate’s enduring legacy.(sharing its style with Nikko).

Located by Shinobazu Pond, the Yokoyama Taikan Memorial Hall is the Kyoto-style Sukiya atelier and residence where Yokoyama Taikan, a towering figure in modern Japanese painting, spent his later years. His aesthetic sense is reflected in every corner of the house and garden, which were built based on his own design. This aesthetic space continues to captivate visitors with its ever-changing views throughout the four seasons.

Kyu-Iwasaki-tei Gardens
Designed by Josiah Conder, the former Iwasaki residence is a distinguished example of modern Japanese residential architecture, where a magnificent Western-style mansion stands alongside a traditional Japanese wing built in the shoin style.
Although smaller in scale, the Japanese wing centers on an elegant grand hall and showcases the refined craftsmanship of pure Japanese architecture of its time, offering a glimpse into the essence of residential culture in modern Japan.

Shinobazu Pond and Bentendo were once part of the vast grounds of the grand Toeizan Kaneiji Temple. The central octagonal hall, Bentendo, is dedicated to Benzaiten, the Goddess of Wisdom and Wealth. This essential Ueno landmark preserves the historical and spiritual heritage of the Edo period.
